Igbo Names With Meanings

A name is not just the declaration of one’s identity, but also an expression of what and who constitutes the unique self. So you should look for a name that reflects culture and heritage, especially if you happen to be from southern Nigeria.

Igbo is an ethnic group from Southeast Nigeria. Most of the Igbo names are grammatically constructed and have symbolic meanings. The names reflect the circumstances under which the child was born. Some igbo names also have strong undertones as Igbo people believe in appraising the strength and power of God while naming their children. Deceased ancestor and place of birth are other considerations. To differentiate individuals with the same names in the same generation, the elders join the father’s first name to the given name. It’s also said that in the old times, Igbo women were named after market days.

Surnames are equally important amongst the Igbo people. It’s an evidence of your root and a mark of the identity. Surnames are also used for sustaining the family heritage. Unlike western custom, women do not change their last names after marriage. Even if it was necessary, she could change it to her husband’s first name.

What is your name? What does it mean? My name is Ijeoma. It means ‘safe journey’, ‘good journey’ or ‘good trip’. Igbo names are known for having unique meaning. Parents would usually name their child based on their history, how they met, their circumstances, circumstances surrounding the birth or their prayer for the child. Children may also be named after their parents or someone in the family eg: grand parents. Literally, you have limitless options when it comes to naming your child. You can choose from words, phrases or sentences.

Common words seen in Igbo names and their meanings

Chukwu/Chi: This means God. It can be a prefix or suffix. The Igbos believe in God and would add His name to the child’s as a way of affirming that belief.

Nna: This is father. Again, this would mostly refer to God. It can however relate to the earthly father.

Nne: The Igbo word for mother.

The above words can either come at the beginning or be seen at the end of the name. Names with the word ‘Chukwu’ are often shortened to ‘Chi’. Although there are some names mostly borne by a particular sex, names are usually intersex.
