Jose Mourinho has stated that Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku could be doubts for Manchester United’s FA Cup final clash against Chelsea next weekend due to injury.
Mourinho was forced to make changes to his side that beat Watford 1-0 on the final day of this season’s Premier League at Old Trafford.
Martial was not included in United’s squad that edged Watford while Lukaku is yet to join his teammates since the injury he sustained against Arsenal.
Speaking post-match after the win against Watford, Mourinho provided injury updates on Martial and also Lukaku amid fears both could miss the FA Cup final.
“Martial is injured,” said Mourinho.
“He was injured, he was injured Friday training session, yesterday couldn’t train.
“He had treatment in the morning at the training round and he stayed away. I don’t know.
“I know that Romelu will be back for Tuesday because he’s in the last week [of rehabilitation] and we have to see but Anthony I have no more.”
Mourinho stated Michael Carrick who played his final game for United in the win against Watford could become his assistant.
“I think it will be Michael Carrick in future, when he has his badges,” he said.
“When he has his pro licence, when he makes the bridge from player to assistant.
“I got to Michael in the last part of his career and it was enough to fall in love with the player and person.”
And following the departure of his long time assistant and friend Ruo Faria, Mourinho said he will not have any assistant next to him.
“It’s difficult because he is my friend, 17 years is a long time,” Mourinho added.
“We spend more time with each other than anybody else in our lives. It’s a new moment for me. The process of education is something I like to do. It’s an opportunity for other guys to step up.
“There will be no number two. I will reorganise my coaching staff in a way assistant manager doesn’t exist.”
